Ingredients

For the Donuts
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.75 cup buttermilk room temperature
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter melted and cooled
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 Oreo cookies finely crushed, about 0.75 cup
For the Glaze
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup Oreo cookie crumbs for topping

Equipment

  • Donut Pan
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Wire cooling rack

Method

Prep
  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 12-cavity donut pan generously with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until no cocoa lumps remain. Stir in the crushed Oreos.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry and fold with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix - a few small lumps are fine.
  5. Spoon batter into a piping bag or zip-top bag with the corner snipped. Pipe into donut cavities, filling each about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake 10-12 minutes until donuts spring back when lightly pressed and a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Whisk powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla until smooth and pourable. Dip the top of each cooled donut into the glaze, letting excess drip off. Sprinkle with Oreo crumbs immediately before glaze sets.
  8. Let glaze set for 15 minutes before serving. Donuts are best the day they're made.

Notes

For extra Oreo flavor, add 1 tablespoon of the Oreo cream filling to the glaze. No buttermilk? Stir 1 teaspoon white vinegar into regular milk and let sit 5 minutes. These freeze well unglazed - thaw and glaze fresh when ready to serve.
