Ingredients

For the Smoothie Base
  • 2 medium frozen bananas peeled and frozen overnight
  • 1.5 cups frozen strawberries divided
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch process preferred for deeper flavor
  • 0.25 cup milk of choice plus more as needed
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup optional, to taste
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract
For Topping
  • 0.5 cup fresh strawberries sliced
  • 0.25 cup granola
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs
  • 1 tbsp shredded coconut toasted or raw

Equipment

  • High-Speed Blender
  • Serving Bowls

Method

Blend the Base
  1. Add frozen bananas, 1 cup frozen strawberries, cocoa powder, milk, maple syrup if using, and vanilla to a high-speed blender. Start on low and use the tamper to push ingredients down, gradually increasing to high. Blend until completely smooth and thick, about 45 to 60 seconds. The mixture should be thick enough that you need to scrape it out - if too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time.
  2. Immediately scrape the smoothie into two shallow bowls, using a spatula to create swoops and ridges that will hold your toppings.
Add Toppings
  1. Arrange remaining 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, fresh strawberry slices, granola, cacao nibs, and coconut over the smoothie base. Serve immediately with a spoon - this is meant to be eaten thick, not sipped.

Notes

For the thickest texture, freeze your banana slices flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet before transferring to a bag - this prevents clumping. No high-speed blender? Use a food processor and scrape down sides frequently, or let frozen fruit soften 5 minutes first. Prep ahead by portioning frozen fruit into freezer bags so you can dump and blend on busy mornings.
