Ingredients

For the Peach Base
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) canned sliced peaches in heavy syrup do not drain
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
For the Cake Topping
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix dry
  • 1.5 sticks (12 tbsp) unsalted butter very cold, cut into thin slices

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

Prep
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Open the cans of peaches (remember, do not drain the syrup!) and pour their contents evenly into the prepared baking dish. Spread them out to form a nice, even layer across the bottom.
  3. Sprinkle the ground cinnamon evenly over the peaches. This adds a lovely warmth to the fruit.
  4. Evenly sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix directly over the peaches and cinnamon. It's crucial not to stir the layers at this point; just let it sit on top.
  5. Arrange the thin, very cold slices of unsalted butter over the entire surface of the dry cake mix. Try to cover as much of the mix as possible with the butter slices. As it melts, it'll moisten the cake mix beautifully.
  6. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is gorgeously golden brown and bubbly around the edges, and the cake topping appears set. You should see the peaches bubbling up through the cake layer.
  7. Let the dump cake cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving warm. It's absolutely irresistible on its own, but truly shines with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor and a delightful crunch, sprinkle about 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts over the cake mix before adding the butter slices. If you prefer a less sweet dessert, you can use peaches in light syrup or even drain about half of the syrup from heavy syrup peaches before adding them to the dish. This dump cake is excellent served warm, but leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or oven for that fresh-baked feel.
